Millennium Development Goals Secretariat

Our role and responsibilities

• Help inform and educate the Council of Ministers and, in particular, the key Ministries, on what each Ministry can do to help attain Millennium Development Goal targets in their responsible areas
• Provide a formal mechanism to enable the Council of Ministers to revise current Millennium Development Goal targets
• Assist the Government to identify areas where resources can be invested to achieve the Millennium Development Goal targets, and
• Identify and present solutions to bottlenecks that hamper the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal targets in Timor-Leste by 2015.

Why we were formed

In September 2000, all 189 members of the United Nations adopted the Millennium Development Goals at the Millennium Assembly.

Timor-Leste recognises that these goals, in the areas of poverty, hunger, malnutrition, education, health, gender equality and environmental sustainability, provide a real basis to greatly improve people’s lives.

While Timor-Leste has attained the targets set for some Millennium Development Goals, in many areas Timor-Leste still has some way to go.

The Government of Timor-Leste feels strongly that long term development planning should be carried out to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Further, these goals should be local and suit the specific situation and context in Timor-Leste.

Timor-Leste tracks the progress it has made in achieving these goals through its Millennium Development Goals Indicators.

Our structure

To ensure this planning reaches all parts of Government and is well coordinated, the Millennium Development Goals planning unit was established and a Secretariat was formed in October 2009.

The Millennium Development Goals Secretariat is an independent department of the Directorate General for Policy and Research in the Ministry of Finance.
