The Budget Office is responsible for the provision of advice on establishing and maintaining an expenditure management system that is adequate and sustainable. A key output is the annual production of a transparent and accountable East Timor Combined Sources Budget. The Budget Office works closely with Tax Policy. 

The Budget Office oversees the sustainability of government finances through delivering the Budget and financial reporting requirements specified in the Regulation 2000/20 on Budget and Financial Management, monitoring agency aggregate spending patterns and providing advice on the financial implications of civil service related policy issues
