Customs Authority and Tax Authority enters into force to strengthen implementation of Fiscal Reforms

Dili, 2nd October, 2017– The Ministry of planning and Finance is pleased to announce the new Customs Authority and Tax Authority is legally in force and functioning on the 30 September 2017 and 1 October 2017 respectively. The two institutions were established to succeed the Directorate General of Customs and Directorate General of Revenue.

The implementation of the two authorities marks another important milestone in the Fiscal Reform Program to modernize, instil integrity, transparency and professionalism in the Customs and Tax Administration.

The authorities’ organization structure will support the recruitment and training of new technical staff to implement the new legislation and procedures and the acquisition and implementation of information systems to automate and simplify the workflow. These changes will progressively work together to efficiently collect revenue, facilitate trade and reduce costs to doing business.

The Minister of Planning and Finance, Rui A. Gomes said:

‘it is a momentous day for the country as the two new authorities will play an important role in Timor-Leste to achieve its full potential in terms to grow, diversify and strengthen investment in the economy. I am delighted that the two new authorities once fully functional will improve service delivery to tax payers, importers and exporters and transparently mobilize more revenue. In this way the Government, will have resources to invest in the country to ensure the wellbeing of all citizens.’
