People’s Republic of China donates X-Ray to the TL Customs Services

On 18 March 2012, the Ministry of Finance held a ceremony at the Dili Port regarding the handover of seven X-ray systems donated by the Government of the People’s Republic of China to the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

Prime Minister of RDTL Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Vice Minister of Finance Rui Manuel Hanjam, and the Director General of Revenues and Customs Câncio de Oliveira welcomed the Ambassador of China, His Excellency Mr. Tian Guangfeng along with the technicians of the NUCTECH, the manufacturing company of the X-ray system.

In his speech, the Vice Minister of Finance expressed his gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for its prompt response to the request for x-ray equipments made by the Prime Minister of RDTL. He said that this demonstrates the good relationship that exists between Timor-Leste and China. Mr. Hanjam also thanked the NUCTECH firm for the equipments, which are expected to enhance security and facilitate the inspection of the Customs services at the Dili Port. The equipments will also enable the customs staff to better perform their control on the entry of goods and commodities at the port. Vice Minister also underlined the necessity for a NUCTECH technician to train the Customs staff for one year in order to strengthen their  capacity to effectively manage these equipment.

The Prime Minister, in his address, emphasized that the Customs Service is actively pursuing the modernization of its services and is embracing an ambitious reform and development program that will entail restructuring of its management and operations according to the parameters and best practices set up by the World Customs Organization (WCO). In addition, he said that these donated equipment will elevate the functioning of the Customs according to international standards.
