Minister of Finance receives a Courtesy Call from the EU Ambassador to Timor-Leste

Dili, Timor-Leste – H.E. Minister of Finance, Rui Augusto Gomes accompanied by H.E. Vice-Minister of Finance, Dra. Sara Lobo Brites, received a courtesy call from H.E. Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Timor-Leste, Mr. Andrew Jacobs and the Head of EU Cooperation Section, Mr. Ramon Reigada.

The meeting discussed various topics including the EU’s Direct Budget Support program, fiscal and public financial management reform, private sector development, economic diversification, digitalization, as well as other priority areas.

During the meeting, H.E. Minister Rui Augusto Gomes said “The Government of Timor-Leste through the Ministry of Finance notes that the EU is one of the biggest donors to Timor-Leste. We also note that the EU is so far the first and only donor that provides assistance through Direct Budget Support and this is a sign of trust to us and we will continue to improve our accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness during the mandate of this Government.”

Ambassador Jacobs replied that the EU is very proud to provide Direct Budget Support program to the Government of Timor-Leste. He also congratulated Minister Rui Augusto Gomes on his new appointment and assured the Minister that EU stands ready to continue supporting the Ministry in the implementation of the strategy of improving public financial management as it is a key to the economic development.

During the meeting, the Vice-Minister Sara Lobo also took the opportunity to thank the EU for helping the Government financing the purchase of the most advanced version of the Standard Integrated Government Tax Administration System (SIGTAS V.3). Last year, under the leadership of the Vice-Minister, the Tax Authority launched the e-Services portal which comes with e-Request and e-Reporting. This digitalization clearly facilitates both taxpayers and the Tax Authority in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and further encourages transparency and accountability in the public sector, particularly in the revenue management and administration areas.
