PRESS RELEASE: Timor-Leste Participates in the Seventy-Seventh Session of the UN ESCAP

Dili, 27 of April 2021 – the Minister of Finance, Rui Gomes led the Delegation of Timor-Leste and participated in the Seventy-Seventh session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP). The theme topic of this 77th session was “Building back better from crises through Regional Cooperation in Asia and the Pacific.”

This multilateral forum kicked-off with the official Opening Statement by Professor Armida Alisjahbana, the Executive Secretary of the UN ESCAP, followed by Keynote Addresses from Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and Guy Ryder, Deputy General of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Heads of States, Senior Government Officials and other Key Stakeholders from twenty-one Asia and the Pacific countries including Timor-Leste delivered their country statements on how to better coordinate stronger regional responses in addressing the significant socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has hard hit the Asia-Pacific region. They also reviewed how these impacts may further affect the region’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

In his official statement, the Head of Delegation of Timor-Leste, Minister Rui Gomes said, “Timor-Leste has experienced three recessions in four years due to a prolonged political impasse, we are in the midst of the first Covid outbreak and the destruction is visible. This situation places the country far more distant from achieving an upper-middle income status by 2030. However, the Government is determined to sustain the economy, so as not to let the crisis worsen and to defend the people’s wellbeing, on the one hand and, on the other hand, to transform the foundations of Timor-Leste’s economy and society so as to make them more resilient to future shocks.”

On behalf of the Prime Minister, General Taur Matan Ruak, the Head of Delegation thanked the Secretariat for inviting Timor-Leste, which is also an active member of ESCAP, to attend this multilateral forum. Minister Rui Gomes also affirmed that Timor-Leste is open to more collaboration at a multilateral level to improve the lives and livelihoods of its citizens. The Head of Delegation concluded the country statement and welcome the recommendations made by the UN ESCAP Secretariat to strengthen cooperation in the region towards a joint recovery, building back better during the post-pandemic period.
