A brilliant sun, a refreshing breeze, an enticing view of the sea, local authorities, and hundreds of villagers welcomed Emilia Pires, Minister of Finance, back to her birthplace Rairobo in Bobonaro District on Monday 5 December 2011.
The Minister and her delegation team made the journey to the suco Rairobo in the sub-district of Atabae as part of the unique and immensely successful Census Dissemination Project Sensus Fo Fila Fali, which makes a point of presenting the results of the 2010 Census to community leaders in every single suco of the country. The Minister was welcomed by the community, including the Suco Chief, Mr. Pedro da Cruz and the Sub-District Administrator, Mr. Sidonio Fontes.
The contributions of the Minister’s father, Mr. Alfredo Pires, to Rairobo when he was District Administrator for the region were relayed to the Minister and the community. These included introducing a water supply, irrigation, school and education.
After some introductory speeches Minister Pires went through the Rairobo Suco Report, page by page. To community leaders and people from the village of Rairobo and neighbouring Sucos, the Minister explained the concepts, graphs, maps and numbers describing the socioeconomic situation in the suco. She encouraged the local community to establish local development goals and to work together to achieve them, thus contributing both to their own well-being and to improving living conditions in Timor-Leste as a whole.
A traditional ceremony at the house where Minister Pires was born and visits to local development projects completed a productive and pleasant visit to Rairobo and the sub-district of Atabae.
